The beauty of disguise Ausstellung / Opening November 4th 19.00 - December 17th 19.00

We need celluloid to apprehend and capture laughter.
Light is bright but light darkens the celluloid negative. The more laughter is photographed the darker the stuff of film becomes. If one keeps taking photos the celluloid becomes so black that it begins to drip. Laughter drips black. Sprechsaal is in a mood for mirth and wishes to examine the relationship between disguise, self-development and escapism in relation to consumption. Is shopping a form of escape? What is the mask, how deep the surface? America does ‘have far reaches.’, laughter too. Laughter that seeks is a product of the pressures of success, it straps joy tightly into a corset. To grin into a camera or into a smartphone, the infinite possibility machine, high or not, is no longer mere celluloid, but the pressure remains and it invites consumption. Why don’t we manufacture something ourselves? Who is this ‘we’? Who can resist the desire to satisfy personal needs if they are determined beyond us? What would a future full of hope look like?
In its very own eclectic manner, the Sprechsaal exhibition the beauty of disguise will be looking at some of these questions closely. 20 artists, 20 positions, 20 media. We will look at the surfaces, whether they are laughing or not, in an attempt to understand their structure. It goes without saying, that Sprechsaal will do this with its usual mix of lectures, discussions, performances, audio book evenings, music, and films in our own cinema. You are heartily invited to help us laugh.

Um das Lächeln zu bannen braucht es Zelluloid und Licht. Das Licht ist hell, das Licht verdunkelt das Negativ aus Zelluloid. Je mehr das Lächeln fotografi ert wird desto dunkler wird das Filmmaterial. Wenn man immer weiter fotografiert, wird das Material so schwarz, dass es zu tropfen beginnt. Das Lächeln tropft schwarz. Der Sprechsaal ist froh und geneigt sich die Fragen nach Verkleidung, Selbstverwirklichung und Eskapismus durch Konsum zu stellen. Ist Kaufen Flucht? Was ist Maske, was nur Oberfläche?
"America does have far reaches", das Lächeln auch. Lachen das strebt, besteht aus Erfolgsdruck und und zwingt Fröhlichkeit ins Korsett. In die Kamera grinsen, oder in die stete Möglichkeitsmaschine des Smartphones, high oder nicht – kein Zelluloid mehr, aber der Druck bleibt und entlädt sich in Konsumismus. Warum produzieren wir nicht selbst etwas? Wer ist dieses Wir? Wer kann sich wehren gegen die fremdbestimmten eigenen Bedürfnisse? Was ist eine hoffnungsvolle Variante der Zukunft?
Die Sprechsaal-Ausstellung The beauty of disguise wird sich diesen Fragen auf eklektische Weise nähern. 20 KünstlerInnen, 20 Positionen, 20 Medien. Wir sehen uns die Oberfl ächen an, die lächeln oder nicht und versuchen ihre Strukturen zu verstehen. Sprechsaal-typisch werden wir dies tun mit Vorträgen, Diskussionen, Performances, Hörspielen, Musik und Filmvorführungen.
